Tipex Mouf

Rabbits teeth grow constantly and are worn by grazing, so when they are not properly aligned they can become a problem. Molars can dig into the tongue causing pain, incisors can grow right out of the mouth preventing the rabbit from being able to eat at all.

Tipex comes from a family with misaligned teeth, which he has inherited. One day when he's old enough he will be having those wonky front teeth removed, but in the meantime, they do at least give him lots of character!

"Lots of character? I'd rather have lots of sympathy treats...just sayin'..."

"Where was I? Oh yeah - GIMME SOME TREATS!"

A dear little fluffy friend of mine, Picante, passed away yesterday. She was just two and a half years old. A really sweet and friendly girl, daughter of Salsa, sister of Browncloud, JJ, Boz, Silvio and Noelle, she was not only a former resident at RRR but also a former resident of my own home.

Being such a beautiful and good natured girl, she found a forever home very quickly, so she at least had the last two years being loved by her own family.

Binky free Picante.

Straight Out The Handbook

A little known fact about rabbits is that when a young bunny gets to a certain age, its fellow lagomorphs throw him or her a big coming-of-age party at which they present the big-eared bounder a book. The contents of this book are to be kept secret from humans, so I can't tell you too much, but the general structure of what fills the pages is a manual of sorts, the collected wisdom of those who came before, a guide on how to live as a little fluffster.

Sitting between the chapter on how to decide which cables to chomp for maximum attention and the chapter about how to turn a human garden into a rabbit paradise through a sustained campaign of digging is a chapter entitled "How To Frighten Your Humans". Within that is a large, illustrated section on "Sleeping Positions To Induce Panic", where a whole host of positions are shown that give the sleeper an appearance of lifelessness.

Thistle has studied his copy well. Here we see him demonstrating position 7, one of the more advanced of the set, throwing in variation 4, "Eyes Wide Open".

Well done Thistle, a perfectly executed manoeuvre. Now, if you'll excuse me, while I reflect on your obvious skill I'm just going to have a sit down and see if I can convince my heart rate to drop below a drum roll...

Tuesday Tail #49

I thought we'd have Mallow and Cuba for this weeks Tuesday Tail. If nothing else, I feel much safer taking Mallow's photo from this end...

SLM Season

It appears to be SLM season again in our house. Whereas for the rest of the year all the surfaces of the house are covered in a layer of hay, this time of year they are covered in rolling clouds of white floof. And hay. The source of all this, ground zero of the floofpocalypse, is a little mobile shedding machine that will literally follow the vacuum cleaner re-floofing everything. It is an unending floofarama. Here is the SLM:

I periodically comb/brush/stroke the loose floof out of him, but I couldn't even tell you if this is pre or post defloofing since he always looks the same regardless and sheds fur at the same rate. It is all very frustrating and of course my efforts are not even slightly appreciated. And did I mention the part where I am also permanently covered in a layer of white floof?

"Really? All this negativity? Cos I'm still waiting to hear the bit where any of this is a problem for ME."

"FYI? We're low on hay."

"For some reason."

The Invaders

"Help me human! I am Princess Honour from the planet Carroton. My evil stepfather opened this worm-hole across space through which he intends to invade and conquer your world!"

"The only way to close the wormhole is to overload it with the very substance from which my planet is made - carrotonite. I believe it occurs naturally on your world, growing in orange roots in your soil - just find as much of it as you can and pile it in."

"Hello? Are you there? Oh, I guess the human went to get the carrots! So gullible!"

Getting Wetter All The Time

"This grass was longer and wetter than I anticipated - get the ear-dryer, turn it up to max and point it over here, pronto!"

Tuesday Tail #48

Quite some time ago we noticed Pea had a slightly snotty nose. Except of course we didn't know it was Pea at the time, since we have still not persuaded them to wear little hats with their names on.

Well anyway, being one of the hand-reared "wild" bunch, Caroline was reluctant to put her through the trauma of trips to the vets and having antibiotics. Much as they have grown up into happy domesticated rabbits who enjoy the luxuries of being waited on by humans, that all goes away the moment you try and pick one of them up for health checks. They'll happily hang out with you on the grass doing their thing while you eat lunch, they'll come right up and take food out of your hands if you have any they like, but come health check day they will run up the walls as if their tails were on fire to get away from those very same hands.

Unfortunately, the snot got worse and became so significant you could hear her breathing from the next enclosure over. We clearly couldn't leave it, but catching and medicating her daily while they were living in their fancy Runaround enclosure wasn't going to work. So a little over a week ago, we bit the bullet and moved them into one of our SNUs. It means slightly less space when they are shut in, but unlike their previous house the whole thing is under a roof so they can still use it all in bad weather and of course they are now much easier to catch without causing them stress. Their new house also has slightly more adjoining outdoor space for playtime, although they do have to time-share that space with a few of our permanent pairs.

They were understandably miffed when we first moved them, but looking at them now I'm pretty sure they are over it...

The Mouf of Pain

I got my thumb chomped, for the second time in a month, by a fuzzy little mouf that was too eager to bother checking if the hand that gave it the last treat had yet pulled another from the bag.

Of course it's hard to hold these lapses against the cute owner of the teeth, almost as hard as it is to stop yourself from screaming, shouting and swearing very loudly as a visiting family with young children happen by at the same time...

"Well if you don't want to frighten those kids with another scream, I suggest you start shovelling the rest of those treats right here!!!"

De-Grassy Bunny Hi!

"You MOWED the LAWN???!! Why would you do that??!! I was planning to nom all that long grass!!!"

"Oh well, since you levelled the garden, I'm gonna make the most of it and have a race around."

Er, actually Whisky, that was kinda the point!

"Not listening! Having too much fun! Wheeeeeeeeee!"

Snack Break

After years of service hauling big piles of breakfast around the Rescue, our green snack barrow spectacularly broke apart some weeks back. A shiny silver one has now replaced it.

Thinking back, I am now wondering if it really was the wear and tear caused by the weight of the vegetables that finished the green barrow off...

Bossypants And The Box

Last week we received a sample from bunny treat delivery service Bunny Box, so I asked our Anouska to review the contents for today's post. Unfortunately, when it came to the pre-review photo-shoot (i.e. while there were still snacks left in the box to photograph), apparently the light was 'all kinds of wrong' and made her ears look 'somehow smaller' (she can be a bit of a diva) so we had to abandon that for now. The Bunny Box review will have to wait until the session can be rearranged, preferably with a 'more professional photographer'. That'll be me in a wig then.

While we wait for Miss Bossypants to come down off her high hutch, here's Maximus pulling funny faces at us from inside his house.

Belly Laughs

"Hey BHV! It's really comfy and cushiony up here! So I'm thinking maybe it's YOU that needs to cut back on the sugary carrots!"

[sigh] Thanks for that newby. (Though I'll have you know it's mostly fizzy drinks, chips and shortbread.)

NOTE: This little guy just came in a few days ago, his name will be added to the tags once he has one!

A Bad Impression

I think Whisky is trying to tell me something...

"Oh there you are! It's Sunday, so let's have you over here then!"

"I want to see something cute. Maybe a licky tongue, maybe a yawn, but just make sure it's adorable or you don't get any treats!"

The Con Remains The Same

TOBY: What do you call a human with an empty bucket on his head?

BHV: Ooo, that's a good one! Let me, I don't know! What DO you call a human with an empty bucket on his head?

TOBY: Hey, don't ask me, it's YOUR name! Some other questions you'll be asking yourself later are 'How did a creature so small con me into putting a bucket on my head?' and 'Hey, didn't this bucket have veg in it a moment ago?'.

Maniac, Brainiac, Celeriac

"I've come to eat your BRAINS!!!"

"Because based on how dumb you humans are, I'm guessing you've got nothing but vegetables inside those heads of yours."

Whisky And The Bird

"Is that...?"

"Hey! How you doin'?"

"I thought I told you not to come back after I kicked you out for pooping on my tasty grass ?!!"

"But you got the tastiest worms around!"

"You gotta be quicker than that, buddy!"

"You can kiss my feathered butt! See you next weekend!"
