Majestic Bunny

Yesterday was a very sad day for me - unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our beloved Majestic after his health problems overtook him, which has left me somewhat heart-broken.

My usual thing is to become attached to the crazy bitey rabbits, the rabbits you have to work hard with (like the wild-cross bunnies) and of course the various bunnies I've fostered.  Majestic didn't really fit into any of these categories, yet somehow he became very special to me and through the Rescue I feel I've shared a large part of his life journey - it is very difficult knowing that journey has come to an end.

I suspect Vicki will want to say more about him, having been his foster mum last year, but I just needed to mention his passing here today.

Goodbye dear Majestic.   I will miss you.  The Rescue will not be the same for me without you.

"You want me to tidy up this poo, you say?"

"How's this?"

Perfectly named bunnies

Sometimes the bunny names that Caroline comes up with are just perfectly suited to the bunnies.

As you will have gathered, gorgeous foster buns Clarence and Cora (who I am just a little attached to) went back to the rescue a few weeks ago so that we could do a course of meds for Caroline on another bunny pair. So, after saying goodbye to Cora and Clarence and settling them into a nice clean hutch, I packed Glamour and Majestic into the car and brought them home. In my opinion they both have perfect names. Majestic is a handsome dalmation rex who pulls some suitably noble poses. (An online dictionary tells me that Majestic can mean ‘Having or displaying great dignity or nobility’, ‘Belonging to or befitting a supreme ruler’ or ‘Superior to mundane matters’ – not sure Glamour would agree with the ‘supreme ruler’ bit). And Glamour has a very glamourous mane of hair. They are very well behaved bunnies and no trouble at all to have to stay (injection time with Glamour involves considerably less stomping, grunting and running away than with Clarence). Here are a few photos of them awaiting snacks.

Glamour: “What am I missing? Budge over!”

Glamour: "So, where are these snacks I hear rumour of?”

Majestic: “Get your fluff out of my face!”

Run Rabbit Run

One of the biggest frustrations of running a rescue is trying to educate people about the minimum size of run that will provide a suitable exercise area for bunnies. We ask for a minimum run size of 6ft by 10ft. The RWAF currently say 8ft by 6ft. Pet shops generally say "any size that gets you to part with your cash before you leave the shop".

We also ask for a minimum of 3ft high to allow comfortable headroom for binkying, though we suggest higher ones are better to allow you to sit in the run and interact with the bunnies.

There's another reason why the taller ones are better...

The extra height might keep the local undesirables off your roof!

Warning To All Volunteers and Visitors

Mystery Bunny

This is an urgent warning to all volunteers and visitors to the Rabbit Residence Rescue. Please be on the lookout for Mystery Bunny, pictured above. If spotted this bunny should be approached with absolute caution and if possible avoided completely.

When cornering a human, she is likely to attack with:
  • Paws placed delicately on the legs
  • Nose nudges
  • Friendly "cuddle me" eyes
Victims of her attacks report feeling a warm sense of joy and general cuteness, responding with head strokes and lots of attention. But it is at this point that Mystery will strike, becoming even more adorable, demand more attention and rendering her victims incapable of escape or carrying out even the simplest of tasks (such as cleaning out).

We regret that this advice comes too late for two of our volunteers this Saturday who ventured into Majestic and Mystery's run unawares and eventually had to be retrieved using long poles with hooks.
