Hump day

Mallow has been having antibiotic injections to help with his chronic snuffles.
Mallow doesn't like injections, he's been showing us his appreciation with his teeth on a daily basis.

Ha Ha Too Slow

When taking photographs, sometimes the ones I like the most are the ones that occur in the little actions that only last a split second- the slightly open "I'm talking" mouth or the sticking out tongue- and one I've always been keen to get is the full open mouth "I'm so savage!" yawn.

I was very very close last week when Mallow gave me a prime situation and his biggest lion impression. Alas my camera took a little moment too long for the winning shot, but a goofy face is almost as good...

The Downside

"You introduced me to him, you let him lick my ear and made me fall in love with him... You didn't tell me he snores!"

Smug

We've had our sad losses lately, but it hasn't all been bad. Following on from the death of Cuba, her poor husbun Mallow became quiet and sad alone, like he'd lost a part of himself. A date was set up and it was practically love at first sight, with one lick apparently turning his eligible widow to mush and causing her to worship every little bit of him. Her grooming became so extensive that one time I witnessed him attempting to wash his front paws while she meaningfully washed them with him.

Ladies and Gentlemen (and buns), the new Mrs Mallow.

"I got myself a new lady within a couple of hours and she snogs me all the time! Beat that!"

Cuba

For a long time we knew we were fated to lose little Cuba, an outgoing and adventurous little rabbit with terminal cancer. She never let it get her down, always rushing around, escaping out of her door in the mornings and enjoying her grass area like there was nothing wrong. Her appetite remained right to the end, but she had lost an extraordinary amount of weight and in the last couple of weeks her decline was rapid and obvious. Yesterday we decided with deep regret that it was in her best interests to be helped on her way before she crossed the line into complete unhappiness.

One thing that makes me very emotional is that her husbun Mallow- a rabbit not known for suffering humans gladly- had become very protective of her, often putting himself between Cuba and the approaching meds volunteer with great vigilance (and, on one occasion, with teeth). Yesterday, however, he sat in the doorway to the bedroom where she was settled and just let me fuss him before allowing me to take her away, like he knew it was time.

Kisses in the sun.

Goodbye little Cuba. I hope wherever you are now, you have a huge grass area that will forever be your own.

Capturing The Moment

Cuba and Mallow are not known for sitting still in the grass enclosure, especially at going home time, but with Cuba having terminal cancer and unlikely to be with us much longer I decided to take the opportunity to sneak up when they were having a little moment. I don't think they were impressed.

The Promise

"You can have your photograph now... and later, when you want to put us to bed, I'll be the one playing hide and seek behind the shed where you can't reach me."

Well, I guess I was warned...

Tuesday Tail #49

I thought we'd have Mallow and Cuba for this weeks Tuesday Tail. If nothing else, I feel much safer taking Mallow's photo from this end...

The Mouf of Pain

I got my thumb chomped, for the second time in a month, by a fuzzy little mouf that was too eager to bother checking if the hand that gave it the last treat had yet pulled another from the bag.

Of course it's hard to hold these lapses against the cute owner of the teeth, almost as hard as it is to stop yourself from screaming, shouting and swearing very loudly as a visiting family with young children happen by at the same time...

"Well if you don't want to frighten those kids with another scream, I suggest you start shovelling the rest of those treats right here!!!"

Of course, now the first few are up, ALL the bunnies want in on the act. They're doing all sorts of tricks trying to get themselves cast in the next video.
