Miley
One rabbit that has featured in the blog in the past is Miley, alongside her big and popular husbun Nelson. Both rabbits lived in one of our fancy Special Needs Units, mainly due to Nelson's continual poor health that often was a consequence of his previous mistreatment, and ruled the grass area alongside. Whenever their door was opened they automatically assumed it was time for them to run around, regardless of whether or not it was actually their turn. With Nelson requiring a lot of exercise as a large breed rabbit and to build up his weakened muscles, they usually got their wishes and so they became two of the more well known characters around the rescue.
Unfortunately, after Nelson's unexpected passing at the beginning of August, Miley had to give up her coveted SNU in favour of various other special needs pairs and was clearly lonely and anxious without him, however as well as the summer months being by far our most busy time of year in other areas, her chronic dental issues and development of ear abscesses requiring daily treatment meant she was not considered suitable for putting through bonding at that time.
Sadly, after surgery that was designed to correct her ear abscess issues, complications arose that meant that last Saturday a decision had to be made and I regret to inform you all that despite our good intentions in trying to prevent a lifetime of daily health care, she is now reunited with her Nelson.
Binky free Miley, I hope your new grass area is big and lush.

Teeth and Paws, Pain and Sores
Today's jumbo Tuesday tail of floof belongs to Nelson. I thought Nelson and Miley deserved a day in the limelight to make up for all their recent suffering.
Miley seemed to be having trouble eating and a quick look in her mouth revealed her teeth needed some work. She had already lost a few molars from previous problems and unfortunately when she went in for her dental this time it revealed a few more on their way out that needed to be removed. Poor Miley is back on the grated veg, which she doesn't mind but can be a bit frustrating when her giant friend appears to be able to hoover it all up in seconds! No chewing, no problem! This means they are getting extra helpings as we need to get her weight back up, which of course there have been no complaints about.
While Miley struggles on through her mouth pain, Nelson has developed a massive sore on one of his front paws. It is so large and painful he can't walk on it and regularly keels over trying to manoeuvre himself about without putting it down. He is on pain relief and sadly needs to be kept shut in to discourage him from moving around too much and aggravating it. We have filled their kennel with lots of soft bedding so we'll just have to wait and see how he gets on.
At least they have each other for comfort and support...

Meet Miley
Nelson's partner Miley has issues with her jaw which has led to the loss of a number of her teeth. We need to be careful what snacks we give her, which practically means we grate their morning veg and soak their evening pellets in water.
Now, pellet mush may look pretty unappetizing to us humans, but I can tell you now that it is VERY popular with our dentally-challenged buns...
