Wildie Wednesday

The introduction of two new Duchy Farm kennels which provide housing for some of our special needs rabbits, has led to some additional rabbit proofing of one of our binky areas.

I don't think these three are that pleased about it though....

Tripping on your love

Numbers of times I tripped over Gertrude this weekend? Four!

It's hard to be annoyed at her though, when all she wants is a head rub.

(un) happy hump day

I think this probably explains the issue.

Good news, Bonita, the diets actually working, although you still have a little more weight to loose.

Legless

I think Kanga has decided it's best if he keeps all is legs out of sight whilst I'm around.
He was subjected to an emergency health check the other day as it looked as though he'd broken his leg.

Turns out all that fluff makes his legs look slightly 'odd' and I'd interrupted him cleaning his toes.

He was not amused and spent 30 minutes refusing to come out for behind a shed at bed time as a result.

Two heads are better than one...

Aren't these two cute?

Having fostered these two, I suspect they're plotting world domination though.

Cookey Monster

This week we were contacted by a lady desperately seeking our help.

Her 10 year old daughter was experiencing issues with her rabbit. The rabbit was lunging and biting and the family had become afraid of handling him and cleaning him out.

They had asked for help from local pet shops and rescues but nothing suggested had helped.

Poor Cookey (Cookie with a y as we've had other rabbits named Cookie previously) had been living in a 3ft by 1ft hutch as this was the biggest they could find to buy locally.  They were advised that it was suitable for rabbits.
His owners were feeding him lots of hay, green veg, he had toys to play with had had him neutered to help with his behaviour.

Sadly, as well as being fear aggressive Cookey was exhibiting stereotypical behaviour, repeatedly pacing and running through his tunnel continuously.

Cookey has now come to live at the rescue and will be rehabilitated and rehomed.  He's a lovely healthy boy too.

We are deeply saddened that this lady was not able to find the help she needed and that so much education is still needed as a hutch is just not enough space for a rabbit.

Trumped it

What the bunnies thought of the US presidential election results...

Some were shocked

 Others were disgusted
& some were just plain horrified!

That was until Stomper pointed something vital out....

Happy Hump Day

Wednesday appears to be hump day for humans and bunnies alike...

I think Jubilee has the right idea, she's staying in bed today....

You should never ask a women her age...

In hindsight the conversation should have gone "hello Benson, how are you on this fine sunny morning?"

Instead I asked "How are old you now Benson?  Only you're looking a bit grey".

It was then that Patty boxed me.

Apparently, as well as it being rude to ask women their real age, it's also rude to ask bunnies too.

Who knew. Next time I'll offer more treats and back away slowly.

Furious

Last Sunday Caroline rescued some rabbits. Although the rescue has been closed to new intakes for several months this was a situation we couldn't turn our backs on.

A family of rabbits had been living rough in a well meaning ladies back garden, they had been breeding and many of the baby rabbits were being killed by neighbouring cats.

At 7 months pregnant Caroline spent four hours on her hands and knees in brambles and managed to catch four of the six remaining rabbits, two does, Florentina and Faye, buck Frankie and a tiny baby weighing just over 200g, Flounder.

Florentina

Sadly Florentina had multiple untreated abscesses and had to be euthanised. Faye and Frankie appear healthy, although Faye is currently on pregnancy watch.

Despite Carolines best efforts little Flounder sadly passed away.

I went back to the property in the hope of catching the two remaining babies only to find that the other tiny baby hadn't been seen for nearly two days.

This left one little bunny all on his own. A gorgeous little black lionhead who stared at me contemptuously from the bottom on the garden. I spent three hours in the freezing rain until eventually I caught the remaining baby.

Fury

Caroline healthchecked him and he's been vaccinated too. At 720g he's much healthier than poor little Flounder too.
I've named him Fury, as he reminds me of 'Toothless' and I'll be fostering him until he's old enough to be neutered, bonded and rehomed.

All about me...

For as long as I can remember I've been crazy about bunnies.

I got my first rabbit when I was three years old and when he sadly passed away, another rabbit replaced him.

During my late teens and early twenties my focus switched to horses as where I lived wasn't suitable for rabbits.

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to move to a larger house with a 200ft garden. Pretty much as soon as we'd moved in we adopted three fluffy, little lionhead sisters from a local rescue.
(Prim, Cinna & Katniss)

Nearly a year later they were joined by Haymitch, harder to home as he was difficult to groom and also very food aggressive.

(Haymitch)

The fluffy foursome then moved into more spacious accommodation and I started fostering for other rescues.

A few months later I saw an advert of Facebook posted by Rabbit Residence Rescue asking for volunteers, so I started volunteering.

A couple of months after that I decided to offer a home to an older, harder to home, special needs pair and Miss Marple and Morse (now named Rose and Shadow) joined my ever increasing furry family.

(Miss Marple aka Rose)

(Morse aka Shadow)

As winter came I found myself volunteering more and more at the rescue and Caroline asked me to foster Claudia and Nemo.

(Nemo)

(Claudia)

After Nemo sadly passed away I adopted Claudia and she was bonded to the gorgeous, but 'interesting', Desmond.

(Desmond)

Sadly Desmond passed away after only a few short months with our family.

Claudia was then bonded with Mr Magoo (now named Blue) who had recently been returned to the rescue.

(Mr Magoo, aka Blue)

For unknown reasons Blue and Claudia had a huge fight, several hundred pounds of vets bills later Blue is now happily bonded to Willow (another bun with behavioural issues) and Claudia is happily bonded to Ollie.

(Willow)

 (Ollie)

So that's pretty much the story of how I became bunny mum to ten rescue rabbits and also how I first got involved with Rabbit Residence Rescue.
